Where are your mattresses made?

They are made in the United States, at our innovative production facility in North Carolina.

What's Different About Indigo?

We are pioneering a community initiative where at checkout you can pay for a $50 discount on one of our mattresses for the next person in the chain- creating a continuous link of like-minded individuals who care about others. How does an Indigo mattress contribute to saving the environment?

Your Indigo mattress is meant to be the last mattress you will ever have to buy, thereby keeping our landfills free of additional mattresses that take up valuable space.

What do you mean by a fully laminated mattress versus one with a Flippable Comfort Layer?

Most of our competition has designed a bed where all the foam parts are glued together, making the distinction between the comfort area (the first four inches) and the rest of the bed (the support area) not really important. You can’t replace one section when time and gravity ruin your comfort layer. You can’t flip, rotate, or refresh your comfort layer, since it is all glued together. Your only choice is to buy a completely new mattress—which, of course, is what those companies want you to do. It’s great for profit margins.

Our bed can be opened up, and each part can be replaced individually. The comfort layer can be moved or changed, flipped or rotated. This extends the life of the mattress and the comfort layer, keeps products from building up in landfills, and saves you the cost of an entirely new mattress every few years.

What is the quality of the foam?

All of the foam utilized in our mattress is produced on site, at our mattress manufacturer in North Carolina to CertiPUR-US standards. Our latex is produced in the United States and is 100% natural. Please check our websites for a chemical analysis of all parts of our mattress. We care about the products that are in our mattress and that will be close to you while you are sleeping.

What type of flame retardant is in the mattress?

There are no flame retardant chemicals and no fiberglass in our mattress. We use a rayon-based fabric with a para-aramid fiber that is similar to the material used in a firefighter’s protective suit.

What kind of frame or support should I use for my mattress?

A platform bed works best.  While you can use a boxspring, we don’t recommend it. Any standard platform or adjustable frame will be fine, or put it on the floor.

Do I need new sheets?

Your regular sheets are fine.

Where can I try out the mattress before I buy?

At this time, we do not have a location set up for you to try the mattress, however, we are planning to do Blind Comfort Challenges in many major cities in the near future. Keep an eye on our website! And remember, we offer a 100-night risk-free trial.

How do I move my Indigo bed?

It’s very easy to move an Indigo bed. If you’re relocating it within your home, just take the mattress apart (remove the cover and comfort layer) and move the mattress in pieces—this will make it easy and fairly light.

To take it to a new home, fold the cover, roll up the comfort layers, and roll the larger support base gently and hold it together with stretchy cords or bands.

How do I clean my mattress?

The cover should be dry cleaned, or spot cleaned with a mild detergent and water.

To clean the internal layers, you should open the mattress and vacuum. Learn more about the cleaning benefits of our design here.

How do I wash the covers?

We recommend spot cleaning the cover with a mild detergent.

How do I unpack my Indigo mattress?

Place the mattress on your bed frame, and carefully cut a hole in the plastic. The mattress will expand when the vacuum seal of the plastic has been breached.  Then wait for it return to its full size and remove the plastic wrapper.

Does my mattress need to off-gas when I open it?

No. Just like almost every other substance on the planet, polyurethane foam off-gasses, or releases compounds into the air.  To be safe, we let our materials “breathe” a week in our North Carolina factory, so you don’t need to. Furthermore, our mattresses are not soaked in chemicals, so you don’t need to worry about then when you open mattress.

Is there any latex in the mattress?

The luxury mattress contains latex in the comfort layer. The classic mattress does not have latex.

Why latex?

Latex is hypoallergenic, has great form recovery, and is resistant to mite infections. Latex is also mold and mildew resistant, making it ideal for asthma and allergy sufferers, and is inherently antibacterial and antifungal.

Indigo uses natural latex, which has earned the highest purity certification available in the industry. It’s formed without synthetic particles that can be found in non-natural latexes.

Why is your mattress more expensive?

Our cost is higher because our materials are made with the utmost quality and are sustainably sourced. Furthermore, we choose not to use harmful chemicals and/or fiberglass in the fire barriers protecting the Indigo mattress. Also, our bed is meant to be the last bed you will ever buy since you can open it up and replace only the comfort layer rather, than the entire mattress. You can also open the bed to clean the inside, eliminating the buildup of debris that happens in other mattresses. This benefits you financially and has a positive impact on our environment by keeping mattresses out of landfill space.

What if I don’t have a platform?

You can place the mattress directly on the floor, or you can purchase a platform on which to place the mattress.

Can I use a box spring?

Yes, although a box spring is not needed or recommended.

What is different about the two sides that make them feel different?

One side is slightly firmer because it is topped with a layer of Gel Visco that is  ½” thick. This layer keeps the mattress cooler. The reverse side has a 1 ½” Gel Visco layer and has a slightly softer feel.

What is the life expectancy of the comfort layer

 5-7 years

Do I have to rotate the mattress like a traditional one?

Yes, it is recommended that you rotate both the comfort and support layers, in order to extend the life of the mattress.

Are there any animal products used in your mattresses?

No, we do not use any animal products, or any products tested on animals.

Is it waterproof or water absorbent?

It is water absorbent. We encourage the use of a mattress protector.

Why do you support the Natural Resources Defense Council?

The NRDC works to safeguard the earth—its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends.

They combine the power of more than two million members and online activists with the expertise of some 500 scientists, lawyers, and policy advocates across the globe to ensure the rights of all people to the air, the water, and the wild.

For nearly 100 years, the ACLU has been our nation’s guardian of liberty, working in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country. Whether it’s achieving full equality for LGBTQA people, establishing new privacy protections for our digital age of widespread government surveillance, ending mass incarceration, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach. With more than 2 million members, activists, and supporters, the ACLU is a nationwide organization that fights tirelessly in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C., to safeguard everyone’s rights.

Why do you support Southern Poverty Law Center?

The SPLC is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality. Civil rights lawyers founded the SPLC in 1971 to ensure that the promise of the civil rights movement became a reality for all. Since then, they've won numerous landmark legal victories on behalf of the exploited, the powerless and the forgotten. Their lawsuits have toppled institutional racism and stamped out remnants of Jim Crow segregation; destroyed some of the nation’s most violent white supremacist groups; and protected the civil rights of children, women, the disabled, immigrants and migrant workers, the LGBT community, prisoners, and many others who faced discrimination, abuse or exploitation.

Their Intelligence Project is internationally known for tracking and exposing the activities of hate groups and other domestic extremists.  Their Teaching Tolerance program produces and distributes – free of charge – anti-bias documentary films, books, lesson plans and other materials that reduce prejudice and promote educational equity in our nation’s schools.

Why do you support Planned Parenthood?

We believe women should have access to comprehensive and cost-effective health services.

Why do you support The Smithsonian Institution?

How have mattresses changed over the years?

As early as the 1970s, mattress branding came into vogue. Back then, mattresses were supposed to be really firm—the firmer the better. However, there was no science to back this claim. Today, steel innersprings are going the way of the horse and buggy. Conventional mattresses may be 14-15” thick, but that includes a 4-5” steel innerspring that is mostly air. That’s why we made our mattress 10” thick. It’s the same support and comfort as a 15” mattress sold in a mattress store, but without the worthless innerspring. People are becoming savvier consumers in this market! 15” thick mattresses, retail bait and switch pricing lies, and super firm mattresses don't cut it anymore.

Why did I buy a boxspring in the past?

Essentially, the boxspring was attractive to mattress retailers and manufacturers because it could be upsold as a way to increase the ticket price. It was mostly made of cardboard and metal, and only functioned to make your bed taller—this is just as easy to achieve with the platform you would have to buy anyway.

Are thicker mattresses more comfortable?

Nope. Thicker doesn’t mean better. Your body only really interacts with the first four to six inches of foam in the bed. The rest is there for appearances and to make sure the currently popular sheet size fits.
